This is the first major museum exhibition to be shown in the UK about Japanese Sashiko Textiles. Sashiko is a subject that will be new to many people. Although sashiko is now popular in the contemporary craft world, this exhibition concentrates on the customs and lives of the people who made and wore these clothes out of necessity.
The exhibition at York marks the beginning of a national tour. After York, this exhibition will go on tour to other venues including the Collins Gallery, Glasgow and Plymouth City Museum and Art Gallery.
